Whether you decide on a three hour or six hour fishing excursion or a dolphin and whale search trip, you’re in for an exciting and fun day. All equipment is provided and included in the price along with a couple of drinks and for the 6 hour fishing trip there’s also a packed lunch. Further snacks and drinks are available for a small charge.
After a major overhaul of the boat during June 2006, the sport fishing catamaran we chose is one of the more comfortable, spacious and better equipped sport fishing boats in the harbor.
The day we went was trawling season (May to September) with bottom fishing being the rest of the year. Our “Marinero” (fisherman) was not only entertaining and attentive but obviously an expert fisherman setting up our lines and equipment and the captain is also a very experienced fisherman who knows all the tricks and signs to get you to the best part of the ocean for your fishing. (Nothing missed his eye from sea turtles and sardines to which types of birds were hovering over which types of fish.
So we went trawling with the hope of catching a nice big marlin. The boat we recommend is the European record-holder of a Marlin catch at 485kg. They operate a tag-and-release on all billfish caught and chances are you may also catch tuna, bonito (we caught bonito on our day out), wahoo, dorado, tope, baracuda & shark during the summer and when bottom fishing in winter sharks again, rays, mori & conger eels, kingfish, garfish, red snapper and octopus. We kept the bonito we caught and the mariner will cut it up for you if you want to take it back to eat.
The 6 hour day trip departs 9am from Puerto Rico harbor returning at 3pm and the afternoon trip is a little after 3pm for 3 hours. The afternoon trip may be dolphin searching or a shorter fishing trip which is ideal if you want to take along your partner or perhaps kids who don’t want a full day of fishing. The boat is also available for private charter for a 6 morning trip or 3 hour afternoon trip.
Again for the non-fisherman who tire easy of the wait there’s plenty of space at the bow of the boat for sunbathing (I’m currently red raw from falling asleep up there for an hour without enough suntan cream).
Once you’re here if you want to find out which afternoons are for fishing and which for dolphin searching then give us a ring as each week changes, depending on demand. If you’re after a full day fishing or to charter the boat then the boat is out/available every day for that but again, give us a ring / email us with plenty of notice to ensure availability.
